James O Neill Castlehaven RIP
18/05/2023
James O’Neill - True Gael
The Carbery Board wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to the O’Neill family
of Myross and the Castlehaven club on the lamented death of James O’Neill.
Forever a Castlehaven man through and through, James had a remarkable
career in the administrative side of the GAA and among the various positions he
held down the year were vice-president, chairman, secretary, and club representative
of his beloved Castlehaven club; president, chairman, treasurer, development officer
and club representative of the Carbery Board; cultural officer and club representative
of the county board. The amount of work he undertook in all those positions was
incredible and he was always to the forefront in the progress and promotion of the association.
An inspiring figure as Castlehaven rose from junior to senior ranks and deeply
nn involved in the physical development of the club, at the time of his death he was
vice-president and a committee member. He never missed a Castlehaven match
and woe betide anybody who crossed his beloved Haven. He was also
a great supporter of Cork teams.
Always by his side was his constant companion, his wife Ann, also an officer of the
Castlehaven club and both were staunch members of the church and of all things
Gaelic. James was also involved in various organisations in the parish and was a
great source of knowledge on local history and folklore. His fatherly figure will be sorely missed.
His sons, Seán, Séamus and Mícheál all played for the Haven and Seán has followed
in his father’s footsteps as county board delegate. His daughter Mary is one of the
Haven’s greatest supporters.
A legend in the board room at club, divisional and county levels, James had
few equals in his contributions to the GAA and, as the centenary of the
Carbery Board approaches in 2025, his loss is indeed a grievous one.
The greatest loss is to his family, to Ann, Seán, Mary, Séamus and Mícheál
and the GAA community rallies behind them in their loss.
Fíor-Ghael uasal a bhí ann a chaith a shaol i seirbhís Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.
Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal, dílis. Slán leat, a Shéamuis.
