Carbery Monthly Awards April 2019
West Cork Players on the Victorious Cork Minor Camogie Team.
In 2018 Cork minor camogie players won the All-Ireland title for the first time and captaining that team was Moira Barrett of Ballinascarthy.
That win seemed to inspire our local camogie minor girls here in West Cork and in 2019 there were no less than five girls from this division involved with the team, Hannah Sexton (Kilbrittain/Timoleague, wing back) Claire Kingston (Ballinascarthy, centre back), Sinead Hurley (Enniskean, midfield), Ciara O’Sullivan (Newcestown, wing forward, second year in a row ) and Tara Sheehan (Enniskean, sub who came on in the final.)
The team actually lost the first game in their group against Tipperary but they learned quickly from that defeat and followed up with wins over Wexford and Dublin. They then drew with Galway whom they beat in last year’s All-Ireland final and went on to meet Clare in the All-Ireland final. On a wet and windy day in McDonagh Park in Nenagh Cork played with the elements in the first half and led by 3-11 to 0-3 at the break. It was backs to the wall in the second half against the wind but a courageous display saw Cork winning by 3-15 to 2-12
There were 21 clubs represented on the winning Cork minor team this year, a great incentive to all young camogie players and we congratulate Hannah, Claire, Sinéad, Ciara and Tara on proudly representing West Cork on the team. We wish them all the best of luck in their future camogie careers.
