Carbery Monthly Award Winers Oct 2019

OCTOBER   -  Ballinascarthy Junior A Hurling team.

Having suffered defeats in the 2017 and 2018 SW junior A hurling finals, Ballinascarthy finally got their hands on the Flyer Nyhan Cup in 2019, their first title win since 2000.

In the championship, they beat Newcestown, St. James and great rivals, Clonakilty, to reach the final. Their opponents in the final were reigning champions, Kilbree, in Enniskean.and a great finish by Bal when man-of-the-match, Jeremy Ryan hit five points and Brian O’Donovan scored a vital goal, saw them storming to a 2-18 to 1-11 victory.

The team was captained by Cillian Cullinane and trained by Dermot O’Riordan.

In the county championship Bal beat Whitechurch, with Jeremy Ryan scoring fifteen points, but a tired side lost to Carraig na bhFear in the semi-final. It was their tenth week in a row playing championship hurling and football. Ballinascarthy later went on to add the junior C hurling title to the junior A title, to complete a great hurling year for the club.

OCTOBER  -  St. James Junior A Football team.

127 years is a long time to wait to capture a title. The Ardfield GAA club was first founded in 1892 and had to wait until 2019 before capturing the SW junior A football championship for the first time ever. The winning of that title this year, against all the odds, was the stuff of dreams, a fairy-tale come.

St. James Junior A footballers began the season as rank outsiders for the title but   overcame St. Oliver Plunkett’s , hot favourites Tadhg MacCárthaigh, and Argideen Rangers, to reach their first-ever junior A final. Opponents in the final in Timoleague, were Ballinascarthy, who were going for the double and on a never-to-be-forgotten day in Timoleague St. James shocked the football world by capturing the title on a score of 0-11 to 0-9. Joseph O’Sullivan captained the side. The scenes of delight at the final whistle had to be seen to be believed. The fact that the team didn’t concede a single goal in the championship has added to the glory of the historic win.
