Carbery Monthly Award Winner February 2019
The Carbery Monthly Award in association with the West Cork Hotel and the Southern Star for the month of FEBRUARY is awarded to the Clonakilty GAA Club for their achievement in having three players involved in the UCC teams that won both the Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cups this season.
The Third Level Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cups are second in importance only to the All-Ireland championships and UCC has a wonderful record in both down the years. However, in recent years, with the number of colleges and institutes increasing, it has become increasingly difficult to win either. To win both, as UCC did this year, is a magnificent achievement. The Clonakilty Club played a proud part in both victories.
The Sigerson team beat St. Mary’s of Ulster in the football final and Clonakilty players, Mark White and Liam O’Donovan played on the team. Both came up through the Clonakilty underage ranks and now play senior football with Clon. They both played Cork minor and Cork U.21 and both played on the Cork senior team last Saturday night against Kerry, Mark in goal and Liam at wing back.
The UCC Fitzgibbon hurling team beat Mary I in the final and David Lowney was a member of that team. Like Mark and Liam he played underage with Clon, winning numerous titles and had the rare distinction for a West Cork hurler of playing on the Cork minor hurling team and the U.21 team which reached the All-Ireland final last season.
We congratulate the Clonakilty Club on the wonderful work it is doing in producing quality players like Mark, Liam and David. We wish them all luck in the future.
