AUGUST  -  West Cork Members of the Cork  U.20  Football  Team -

The Cork U.20 football team began the 2019 season under the shadow of a Kerry five-in-a-row in minor football and with a change of manager. By August they were All-Ireland champions following a magnificent campaign that captured the imagination of all Cork GAA supporters and that gave a huge boost to Cork football after a dismal 2018.

In the Munster championship Cork had a big win over Waterford in the semi-final in Clonakilty and caused a huge surprise when hammering Kerry by 3-16 to 0-12 in the Munster final, preventing Kerry from a clean sweep of Munster titles.

In the All-Ireland semi-final they trailed Tyrone by seven points early in the second half but came back to win by two. Then in the All-Ireland final on August 3rd in Portlaoise against a highly-rated Dublin team, they came from 1-6  to nil behind after only twelve minutes to win a remarkable game by 3-16 to 1-14. The team was captained by one of our own, Peter O’Driscoll of Ilen Rovers and Maurice Moore of Carbery Rangers was coach and selector on the team. The nine West Cork players involved  were  Peter O’Driscoll, captain, Ilen Rovers; Mark Hodnett,  Carbery Rangers; Damien Gore, Kilmacabea; Gearoid O Donovan, Newcestown; Fionn Herlihy, Dohenys; Maurice Shanley, Clonakilty; Rory Maguire, Castlehaven, David Buckley, Newcestown; Ian Jennings, Kilmacabea.
