Carbery Monthly Award Winner June 2019
JUNE - Ben Murray, Ballinascarthy and Cathal O’Donovan, Argideen Rangers
Ben Murray and Cathal O’Donovan had the unique distinction of bringing the only All-Ireland senior hurling medals to Cork this season. Ben plays his hurling with Ballinascarthy juniors and Cathal with Argideen Rangers intermediates and both play with the Leitrim senior hurling team. As students in UCD both got involved with Leitrim hurlers over the past three seasons and this year the team contested the final of the All-Ireland Lory Meagher, Division 5, championship. Opponents in Croke Park in the final were Lancashire and in a great game that went to extra time. Leitrim won by a single point, 2-23 to 2-22. Ben scored a point in the final. Ben made history by becoming the first player from West Cork to win an All-Ireland hurling medal with Leitrim and a SW junior medal with his club Ballinascarthy in the same season. The June Award was presented to Ben and Cathal for spreading the hurling gospel from West Cork to Leitrim and achieving the unique honour of winning All-Ireland senior medals as a result.
