Carbery Monthly Award Winner Dec 2019
DECEMBER - Newcestown GAA Club
In 1958 the Newcestown GAA club came into existence as a lowly junior B football club. Sixty years later, 2019, the Newcestown GAA Club now boasts of fielding in three senior grades, football, hurling and camogie. It is an amazing story of progress and success by this rural club that has set the standard for all others to follow.
In 2010, with Jim O’Sullivan as manager, Newcestown won the premier intermediate football title when beating Clyda Rovers in a thriller by 0-9 to 0-8.
In 2015 Newcestown won the premier intermediate county hurling final, under manager Gene Desmond, when beating Valley Rovers by 1-23 to 0-8. Captain was the evergreen John Crowley.
In 2019 the Newcestown camogie team reached the county intermediate final. Opponents were near-neighbours, Enniskean and in a marvellous game, brim-full of excitement and incidents, they won by a single point, 2-9 to 2-8. The team was captained by Mary McSweeney. That memorable win means Newcestown will campaign in senior camogie ranks in 2020.
With senior teams in football, hurling and camogie, Newcestown hold a cherished place in Cork GAA and their amazing achievements are an example for all clubs to follow.
