Easter Message from chairperson, Tom Lyons

  A chairde, we are in strange times with the whole country under lockdown and our elderly being cocooned to protect them. The coronavirus reigns supreme at the moment and there is an onus on everybody to follow the regulations and guidelines laid down to lessen its impact. We are indeed heartened and proud of the response from many GAA clubs and many GAA members in this time of crisis, especially in supporting the vulnerable in our communities.

    We are proud, too, of the part being played by our GAA members in the front line, fighting the pandemic, they are true heroes and our sincere thanks goes to all of them.

    As the lockdown will undoubtedly stretch to the end of April and even, subsequently, the lifting of regulations will be slow and careful to avoid a re-occurrence of the pandemic, we would appeal to all members to have patience in these trying times. The darkest hour is always just before dawn and Easter proves that there will always be light at the end of the darkness.

We thank, especially, all our coaches and players who are putting their internet skills to full use to provide our young players with home activity. We thank, in particular, our GPO, Paudie Crowley, here in West Cork, who is doing trojan work online.

     It is still our intention to start our championship in late June but that will depend on a number of factors, including intercounty fixtures, county board fixtures, Leaving Cert dates and, of course, the virus itself.

     The GAA has faced many tough trials during the past 135 years but with the full support of our communities, the association has survived and prospered. We have no doubt we will come through this safely, too, but let us not be complacent for one single moment. This is a tough battle, one of the toughest we have ever faced, and we all need to pull together to get through this in one piece, including the disastrous financial consequences.

      These are dark days and tough times but as we celebrate Easter let us look forward to better times and a renewal of playing activity and social interaction again. Nothing lasts forever and this pandemic will end, too, so let us join together to make sure we all stay safe until then.
