St. Marys’ Surprise

The Bandon Co-op junior A football championship was guaranteed to throw up some surprises and the first arrived with the defeat of Ballinascarthy by St. Mary’s. The Bal team top Division 1 of the league, unbeaten after four games, while St. Mary’s are bottom of Division 2 with only one played and lost. However, that league form went out the window when the Ballineen/Enniskeane side turned in a great display of first-time football to register a surprise 2-10 to 0-10 victory.

Diarmuid Ó Mathúna seemed to have their game against Carbery Rangers when they held a good lead at the break but a great second half by the Rosscarbery men saw them emerging winners by a single point, 1-11 to 2-7.

Champions, Kilmacabea showed they have lost none of their drive for more success when they registered an impressive double-score victory over O’Donovan Rossa, 2-14 to 1-7, with a large crowd again supporting the Kilmacs.

Only one game is now left to play in Round 1 of the championship, Ilen Rovers v Bandon, due for May 5th.

The winning teams which have gone through to Round 3 of the championship in July are Kilmeen, Kilbrittain, Tadhg MacCárthaigh, Clonakilty, St. Colum’s, Argideen Rangers, St. James, St. Mary’s, Carbery Rangers, Kilmacabea and Ilen Rovers/Bandon. Teams having to play in Round 2, Losers’ Group, at the end of June or beginning of July include St. Oliver Plunkett’s, Barryroe, Muintir Bháire, Clann na nGael, Castlehaven, Dohenys, Ballinascarthy, Diarmuid Ó Mathúna, O’Donovan Rossa and Ilen Rovers/Bandon.

Randal’s v Goleen U.21 Final

The Clona Milk U.21C football final will take place between Randal Óg and Goleen. Last weekend Randal Óg knocked out reigning champions, Tadhg MacCárthaigh in a thrilling semi-final, won by the Castle men by a single point, 2-6 to 0-11. There is no definite date yet for the final because of Randals’ involvement in county junior B.

Newcestown v Bandon U.21B Final

After their exploits on the hurling field last weekend, Newcestown and Bandon will again meet in the final of the Clona Milk U.21B football championship this weekend. Bandon, competing in their fourth final in a row, will start favourites but Newcestown, impressive winners over Urhan in the semi-final, will be itching for revenge for the hurling defeat and might just cause a surprise.

Hurling Prospers

After Bandon and Newcestown showed West Cork hurling at its best, right up at senior level, on Sunday last, it is now the turn of our three intermediate hurling teams to do likewise this weekend. On Saturday next in the intermediate hurling championship, Barryroe take on Glen Rovers, Kilbrittain play Blackrock and Argideen Rangers face up to Castlemartyr. All three have tough assignments but will not be found wanting.

The South-West RTC Tarmacadam junior hurling championship will begin the following week, April 4th/5th.

Bantry in Action

Bantry Blues, after a good win in the preliminary round, will face a tough task on Saturday next when playing strong city side, St. Vincent’s. It will take a good effort from the Blues to win this one and we wish them th
