SW Board Meeting

A large crowd attended the SW Board meeting in Dunmanway on 14th last where the important business were the championship fixture lists for the Bandon Co-op junior A and B football , the RCM Tarmacadam junior A and B hurling and the Clona Milk U.21 A, B and C football. The bad weather and unplayable pitches put paid to most of the U.21 fixtures for the past three weeks, while St. Patrick’s weekend and the Carbery senior game on Holiday Monday meant more delays. The original schedules for the three U.21 championships would have seen the finals being played by March 31st but now it will be well into April, with a resulting clash with adult championship games. The clubs, to their credit, were very accepting of the difficulties being experienced and now have their fixtures.

The junior A football is due to begin on March 31st with a preliminary game between Kilmeen and St. Oliver Plunkett’s while the B football, with only four teams on a round robin system, does not begin until April 28th. The junior A hurling begins on May 5th with two preliminary games, Clonakilty v Plunkett’s and Dohenys v Kilbree. The junior B hurling also gets underway on May 5th.

Bandon Co-op were welcomed as the new sponsors for the junior football championships and Rowa/Rowex were thanked for their support over the past few seasons.

It was emphasized that the mentors of adult teams that include minors in their ranks must be Garda vetted and must have attended a children’s safety and protection course. Audits are being carried out by the GAA authorities in clubs around the county and failure to comply with all regulations will result in clubs actually being closed down until the appropriate courses etc., are carried out.

Clubs were also asked to ensure that the lists of players for matches are properly done, on club note paper with the names in Irish, in order to avoid difficulties with insurance if players are injured.

Ratification of the regulations for the championships was carried through with clarification of the manner in which injured players may be treated on the pitch. While the old habit of numerous mentors running on to treat an injured player is now banned, only one medical person being allowed, it was agreed that common-sense must prevail at all times as regards injuries on the pitch.

While weather has played havoc with league fixtures, most clubs are making a good effort to get games played where possible but there will be a lot of catching up to do once the pitches are playable and evening games come into play. The dates for the league finals this season are last week of June/first week July and those dates will be adhered to.

Carbery Monthly Award

The Carbery Monthly Award for February goes to the Clonakilty Club which had the unique distinction of having three players on the UCC teams which won the dual colleges titles. Mark White and Liam O’Donovan (injured for the final) were part of the UCC football team that won the Sigerson Cup while David Lowney was a member of the UCC hurling team that won the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Carbery Footballers

It was so near and yet so far for Carbery senior footballers when they were most unlucky to lose by two points to CIT in the first round of the championship. Despite hitting two smashing goals, Carbery were unfortunate hit the crossbar and the post with two other efforts and staged a great comeback to draw level in the last quarter. Two injury-time points sealed a 0-19 to 2-11 for CIT but the Carbery players and mentors deserve great credit for the preparation befre and their effort on the day.
